Cleaning your Marble Cutting Board

Having a marble cutting board is one of the most durable items you will have in your kitchen.  Besides it being a decorative piece and available in many colors so it will go with just about any decor.  When it is time to clean your marble cutting board this can be as simple as wiping it off depending on what you have just used it for.  Remember that marble is sealed so besides the marble cutting board being nonporous there is little to worry about having anything seeping in, so it is unlike some of the other types of cutting boards where it is more difficult to control seeping in, such as with a wooden cutting board.

Even if you only use one side or your marble cutting board for your kitchen use, you should always clean both sides when you are finished with it.  Since the marble cutting board is sensitive to many chemicals, using a mild soap with warm to hot water will do just fine.  It would probably be a good idea to let the solution set for a few minutes to get a thorough cleaning.  Then you can dry with a towel, either paper or cloth.  You also have the option to allow your marble cutting board to air dry.  However you decide to dry it, just make sure that there are no streaks once it is dry this may be residue that will need to be wiped off prior to your next use.

What if you get a stain on your marble cutting board?  That may be tricky, but here are a few recommended suggestions:

  • Spread some salt on the stained area
  • Cut a white grapefruit in half and dip a half into salt
  • Rub the half grapefruit/salt mixture on the stained area with the grain of the marble-Wipe off the residue with a damp sponge or cloth
  • Dry as you usually would
  • This is the best eco-friendly resolution for getting a stain out.  If you are looking for an over the counter solution one big thing to remember when cleaning your marble cutting board or repairing is to make sure you do not use a product that has anything toxic in it.  Besides possible ruining the surface, you do not want anything lingering around on the cutting board that can get into your food.
